KNOWLEDGE SHEET : HANDLING DOUBT

Knowledge Sheet::
Handling Doubt-
There are three kinds of doubt:
When we doubt ourselves
When we doubt the people around us, and
When we doubt God
We have never seen God, so there is always a doubt somewhere in our mind as to whether or not God exists.

We see everyone in society with an eye of suspicion. When we do not want people to see us with suspicion or doubt, then we also should not see them in the same way.
Now by saying this I do not mean that you should blindly trust everyone around with everything. Do not just hand over your purse or wallet to some stranger, or think that it is okay even if he runs away with it. That is not what I am saying, but we should become aware of what is going on in our mind. We must pay attention to this fact.

Until we improve ourselves, until we do not kindle happiness and love from within ourselves, how can there be peace and happiness in the society and the world at large?

Volunteer

Who is a volunteer? One who comes to help, without being asked to help; one who is self-motivated, inspired, becomes a volunteer.

There is the possibility of the inspirational motivation going down in a volunteer, which could bring frustration.

Usually volunteers come from the space of demand rather than humility – this dilutes the quality.

Another slack that could happen to a volunteer is that they could slip away from commitment, thinking there is no ‘boss’ – "If I like it, I do it; if I don’t like it, I don’t!" It is like the steering wheel of a car – if all the tires say they do not need steering, then the car cannot run smoothly. If you want to construct a building, you have to accept the authority of the structural engineer.

All these can only be overcome by being more grounded in spiritual knowledge. A volunteer devoid of spiritual dimension is utterly weak.

1) A volunteer needs to stick to his commitment.

2) The integrity in a volunteer comes from spiritual practices.

3) The authority needs to be acknowledged.

4) The strength of a volunteer comes from the challenges he is ready to willingly face.

5) A volunteer moves beyond boundaries as he finds he is capable of doing so many things he never ever thought of doing.

6) A true volunteer does not expect appreciation or reward.

7) A volunteer has such a joy – that joy, itself, comes as the reward.

8) If a volunteer thinks he is obliging somebody, he is thoroughly mistaken. He is ‘volunteering’ because he derives so much joy out of it.

The joy is immediate – it does not come on the first of every month in the form of a salary!

When a volunteer realizes this, he is filled with gratitude.

When a volunteer waivers from within, the support system is knowledge and good friends.

Q: How to overcome desire?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: This is another desire! What we need to know is that a desire fulfilled takes you back to the same place you were before the desire arose.

GET ALL YOUR ANSWERS WITH GURUJI

QNA with Sri Sri::

Q: It is said that one can get liberation by the knowledge of Panchanga (Indian Calendar). Please tell me what is this Panchanga?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Panchanga refers to the motion of the planets and celestial bodies. Astrology itself is Panchanga (a tool used to determine and study the planetary positions and their effects upon an individual). Suppose you are angry at somebody, then you keep thinking, ‘Why did he do this to me?’ Now if you have knowledge of Jyotish (Vedic astrology) then you will understand that there is no fault of that man. You will think, ‘It happened because of some effects of the motion of some planets in my planetary chart. So I had to bear insult’. This is mukti (liberation). The mind which was entangled in Raga- Dwesha (cravings and aversions) with that person gets detached. Jyotish helps you understand that your time is bad; which is why even good people quarrel with you and if the time is good, even your sworn enemies help you in times of need. So when you understand this, then the Raga- Dwesha in your mind gets dissolved and mind becomes quiet.
What is Mukti? Suppose you drank a lot of water and you need to go to washroom to relieve yourself, but you are sitting in a meeting and are not able to go. When finally you go and come back, you feel relieved, as if to say, “Ah! I am finally liberated” (Laughter). So when some wedding or a party at home gets over and all the guests depart; you exclaim “Hai! Finally it’s over!” Is it not so?
Whenever you feel this “Hai!” (out of relaxation), just think of it as Mukti and when there is “Hai-tauba (out of chaos and confusion), think of it as bondage. When we are contented in life, that is jeevan-mukti (being liberated while stile living). It is a stage in which you feel – ‘I do not need anything more in this life. I am contented and I will serve others to the best of my capacity. This whole world is mine; all this is my reflection (of the Self) and my own nature.’ When you become so firmly established and strong in this knowledge from within, then contentment and joy dawns in you. All the complaints disappear. Everything becomes available even before the wish arises. Within no time, all the required knowledge comes to the mind. This all is called jeevan-mukti.

DAILY SUTRA

Daily Sutra::

Now that you know that you get whatever you ask for, ask for big things and not small things. Don’t ask for yourself; ask for the country, for everyone. Pray that Dharma (righteousness) increases and Adharma (unrighteousness) diminishes. Justice increases, injustice diminishes, lack decreases and abundance increases. Pray for the welfare of everyone. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

Q: What is stress, and when do we experience it?

QNA with Sri Sri::

Q: Can you please speak about the Manusmriti (Meaning “Laws of Manu”, referring to a text that expounds the code of laws & Dharma that should govern an individual and the society)? Is it relevant today?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, Manusmriti was written by a king called Manu. He was a very wise king. A few lines in the Manusmriti which talk about how women should always be protected or a little bit about caste system; these have been misinterpreted. I would say they might be interpolated (meaning: stretched too far). But this is not a scripture of the rishis. It is by a king, so it is like a Constitution. That is all. So the Manusmriti is not an authority for the Sanatan Dharma (Vedic name for Hindu Religion). We do not need to follow it. It is like a Constitution. Like the Indian Constitution, the people in those days also made certain rules. So at that time Manu made certain rules. But it is not a universal scripture and it is not necessary for everybody to follow. It is not applicable for everyone everywhere and for all times. It is not so at all.
But there are some very good things also mentioned in the Manusmriti. It has very good knowledge. So you should take that which is relevant today and leave the rest. Our people have been following this in our country. You should always look at all the scriptures in the world with reason, with wisdom. This is what scriptures also say. They say that you should keep the Desha (country or place) and the Kaala (time) in mind when you apply knowledge or a particular scripture. This is important. Why are there so many problems in the world today? It is because some people want to implement those scriptures today which are 2000 years old or maybe 1400 years old. But they are not applicable today at all. This is the whole problem in the Middle East. Some people want to impose those rules which are not applicable for today’s time. It had relevance at that time but they are no longer relevant.

Narayan means what? That energy which is present in all the nervous systems, in all of creation. Anything that sparkles in living beings is called Narayan.

The word 'nervous system' comes from the Sanskrit word 'Nara', which also means 'human beings'.

Narayan means that which is housed in the beautiful and amazing nervous system. Just imagine a human being without a nervous system, he will not be alive. It is because of your nervous system that you are able to express yourself. That energy which perceives and which expresses in the whole universe is Narayan.

(KNOWLEDGE SHEET) SUBJECT : ACCEPT PEOPLE

Accept people as they are-
The first thing that we need to do is to accept people as they are.

How many people have you met in your lives who are exactly like you? Have you met anyone like that? You have not. Yet you want that everyone should think and act like you do. You know, if you meet someone who is exactly like you, then you will not be able to tolerate them for even five minutes. The truth is that it is very difficult to tolerate someone who thinks and behaves just like you. This is the very foundation principle of The Art of Living.

Just see, there is only Jesus in the world yet do you know how many sects of Christianity are there in the world today? There are 72 sects of Christianity in the world today. How many sects of Islam are there today? There are five well known ones – like Shias, Sunnis, Ahmediya, Sufi, etc. There was only one Lord Buddha, but there are 32 sects or traditions in Buddhism today. And you cannot even count the number of different sects and traditions in Hinduism (Laughter).

For every great saint that has been, there is a tradition and sect of his following. There are many schools of thought in Sikhism also. So as time progresses, different saints, different religious philosophies and schools of thought emerge. We must let all these diverse traditions and sects grow and develop. When one tries to make everyone behave and think in the same way, then the outcome is what we are seeing in countries like Syria, Egypt, etc. The conditions there are very unfortunate.

LIVE LIKE A LION

BE ENTHUSIASTIC -SRI SRI

Be enthusiastic and praise others  - Sri Sri

Enthusiasm is the nature of life. We often have a tendency to put cold water on other's enthusiasm. Reverse this tendency. Take every opportunity to praise others and support their enthusiasm. If you put down other's enthusiasm, the same may happen to you. As you sow, so shall you reap. Recollect how much enthusiasm and joy you had when you went to the primary school. Someone without enthusiasm is like a corpse. But as you mature, the enthusiasm curve declines. As enthusiasm declines, we stop communicating.
How would you like to see yourself ? Happy and bubbling with enthusiasm or dull and difficult to please? Often, you like to be pleased, appeased and cajoled. So you put up a tough, upset face and act difficult to please. If a person has to appease and please ten people all the time, it will be so tiring. People who keep a long face and expect others to cajole and appease them make others run away. Lovers often do this. They expend a lot of energy in cajoling, and this brings down the joy and celebration of the moment.
If you feel down, appease and please yourself. Your need to be appeased by someone else is the sign of grossness. If you want attention, all you get is tension. It is not possible to attain Divine Love with a complaining face. Become one whose enthusiasm never dies.

GURU ONE LINERS

Q: In what form are demons present in this day and age?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Those who leave humanity and terrorize people, they are the demons

GURU PUNCH

Until we improve ourselves, until we do not kindle happiness and love from within ourselves, how can there be peace and happiness in the society and the world at large? - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

DAILY SUTRA

Love is your nature, love does not mean that you keep saying, ‘Oh I love you so much’, no! It is acting with dignity, naturalness, compassion and simplicity, and we are born with these qualities. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

GET ALL YOU ANSWERS WITH GURUJI

Q: What is the significance of applying tilak on the forehead (referring to the portion of the forehead between the eyebrows)? What does it represent? Married women in our country also apply the tilak. What is the reason behind it?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: The third eye is present there (referring to the center associated with alertness or awareness). So there is a custom of applying sandal paste or other things at the location of pineal and pituitary glands which have a great effect on our body and mind. One reason for applying the paste is to give respect to that portion of the forehead. It stimulates our attention.
Whenever you think, what do you do? Your hand automatically goes at this place. When you make a mistake, your hand goes at the head. When you think or deeply ponder over something or some problem comes then too you keep your hand like this. If you go to any country or any corner of the world, you find that everywhere people think like this. This is the seat of wisdom. It is the peetha (seat) of knowledge. That is why chandan (sandal paste), kumkum or sindoor (vermillion powder) is applied there. It is symbolic.

(KNOWLEDGE SHEET) SUBJECT : FASTING

Fasting Scientifically-
Fasting and prayers are somehow connected. In almost every religion and every tradition of the world they have connected fasting and prayer together.

When you fast you are not pleasing some god out there by your fasting. It simply helps to detox your body. When the body gets detoxified then thoughts become positive. When there are too many toxins in the body, and the pancreas, liver and intestine are all congested then your thoughts are all negative and unclear. So fasting is done to have that cleansing effect on your body, not to please a god.

Fasting also has some rules, but people don’t follow even the fasting rule properly. People think fasting means that they can eat certain things and cannot eat certain things. You can eat lots of nuts and fruits but not eat cooked food, or rice, or bread. This is not fasting.
Someday people eat boiled potatoes and sweets and say they are fasting. They are fooling themselves. And sometimes, some people who want to fast all day get up before sunrise and stuff themselves with food. Then they fast and as soon as the sun sets, again they stuff themselves. It is a very bad way of fasting.

Fasting has to happen scientifically. Fast with juice and water, some fruits so that the enzymes are generated in the body. The indigested food gets digested. It is very bad eating very late in night on fasting days because your digestive fire is not there to digest that food. So you should not do that.

People fast in an unscientific manner. Fasting should be rational. Almost in every tradition people fast this way – Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus – they all should know the scientific way of fasting.

The Ayurvedic way of fasting is very clearly mentioned. Little bit of fruits, juices, water and lemon. And if your endurance is there then fast just on water, one or two days. This is what we need to educate people.

Even during the month of Ramadan, they fast whole day, the pitta rises, and in the evening they eat so much. This is wrong. In the evening when they eat, they should have salads, fruits, and something light; something that gives rest to the system.

Hindus do fasting during navratri, and they eat jalebis! They eat all the sweets, and boiled potatoes – that is starch! This is not the correct way, there should be only fruits and fruit juices.

THE BHAGAVAD GITA

We shall soon starting with Bhagwad Gita Quotes

                                                                       THE BHAGAVAD GITA

                  or

    THE  GLORY OF GITA

           INTRODUCTION

 the GITA the Lord openly declares that he who follows His instructions in the shape of the GITA, will undoubtedly attain liberation. Not only this, He further says that even he who studies this scripture; will have worshipped Him through wisdom-sacrifice.

When such is the value of a mere study of Gita; what shall we say of the man who has moulded his life according to its teachings and initiates God's devotees into its secrets and disseminates and propagates its teaching among them. Referring to such a man; the Lord says that he is very dear to Him. It will be no exaggeration to say that he is dearer to God than His very life.

The Lord subordinates himself to the will of such devotees. Even in case of noble souls; it is found that those who follow their teachings become dearer to them than their own life.

 The GITA constitutes the Lord's principal mystic teachings. What wonder; then; that the follower of these teachings should be dearer to Him than even His life.

The GITA is the very life breath; the heart; and  the verbal image of the Lord.He who has his heart, speech , body and all his senses and their functions imbued with the GITA; is the very embodiment of the GITA.

His very sight, touch, speech and thought lend supreme sanctity to others ; to say nothing of those who follow his precept and example.

Really speaking; no.sacrifice; charity; austerity; pilgrimmage; religious vow; self-restraint and fasting etc.;stand comparision with the GITA.

 The GITA contains words directly emanating from the lips of Bhagavan Sri Krsna. Its compiler is Maharsi Vyasa. The Lord uttered parts of His discourse in verse, which the compiler Vyasa recorded exactly as they emanated from His lips. The part of it uttered in prose was versified by the compiler, and the words of Arjuna, Sanjaya and Dhrtarastra were similarly versified by him in his own words, and dividing the book of seven hundred verses into eighteen chapters, he made it an organic part of the Mahabharata. This is how the book has come down to us.

SHORT QUOTES TO BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY WITH GURUJI

Any occasion to celebrate the love, the Universe in you is as special as you

Q: Gurudev, What is the solution for the Kashmir issue? Peace talks for the past 50 years have failed. Is war the solution? Lord Krishna also fought for truth. Has the Kashmir issue become an ego issue?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: In the recorded history of the world, the world has been peaceful for only 288 years. This is only 8% of the time! This is what the historians stay. That means conflicts have been there all through.
For the India-Pakistan issue, people to people contact is essential. That is the way to go forward. The terrorists that they trained to work against India are now working against them. They have to realize this. They have to drop these strategies and come on board and make South Asia free from poverty. They should fight against poverty, not against India. India and Pakistan should work together to eliminate poverty.
Today, if you tell the Kashmiris, 'Those of you who want to go to Pakistan can go', nobody will go. They know on that side of Kashmir people are not happy. People there are poorer than the Indian Kashmiris.
The Azad Kashmiris have not even seen beds. They don’t know what air conditioning is, or dining tables, or chairs. They are in very poor condition. When they come and see people here, they say that this is really different.

You are privileged

Among all planets in the solar system, the earth is privileged to host life in its many forms, and among all the species, humans are most privileged for they can host the Knowledge. Among all the knowledgeable ones, you are most privileged..... guess why.
Again and again you remember that you are peace, you are love, you are joy and that you are hosting the Creator. If you don? realize that you are the host, you live like a ghost.
The under-privileged are those who do not realize that they are privileged, and so they also host, but they host all the negativities.
Like the birds returning to their nests, again and again come back to your source; only there can you realize that you host the Creator.

SHORT QUOTES TO BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY WITH GURUJI

When we recognize somebody's mistake, if we don’t feel compassion for them, then definitely feel anger, and this anger becomes hatred.

GET ALL YOUR ANSWERS WITH GURUJI

Q: Gurudev, What is the significance of karva chauth? What is the story behind it? Can only married women do it? Is it really a good time to meditate on this day?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: There are so many festivals in India, almost as many as the number of Sundays in a year.
Karva chauth is one festival where women pray for their husband’s longevity, and there are stories associated with it. I don’t know much about these stories.
It seems that women were very powerful in ancient days. If they tell the sun not to set then it would not set. They said women were powerful to that extent. There are many such stories, and they are all inspiring stories to remind one of a higher cause. So, this is one such festival in India.

Shiva and Krishna Are One

Angels are a part of the Big Self. The infinity has diverse qualities, and specific qualities assume names. They are called Angels. Angels are nothing but a ray of your Big Self. They are there to serve you when you are centered. Like roots and stems and leaves come out of a seed when it is sprouted, all the Angels in your life manifest when you are centered. Angels rejoice in your company, but you have nothing to gain from them. They only come around those who have nothing to gain from them. Angels are like your extended arms. Like all the colors are present in the white sunlight, all the Angels are present in your higher self. Bliss is their breath, dispassion their abode. The consciousness which is bliss, innocence, omnipresent, and the bestower of dispassion is Shiva. Krishna is the outer manifestation of Shiva. And Shiva is the inner silence of Krishna.

What Sri Sri said

The Circle Of Desires

{KNOWLEDGE SHEET} SUBJECT : ATHEISM

Atheism Is Not A Reality

It is difficult to see God as formless and it is difficult to see God as form. The formless is so abstract and God in a form appears to be too limited. So some people prefer to be atheists.
Atheism is not a reality, it is just a matter of convenience. When you have a spirit of enquiry, or in search of truth, atheism falls apart. With a spirit of enquiry, you cannot deny something which you have not disproved. An atheist denies God without first disproving it. In order to disprove God, you must have enormous knowledge. And when you have enormous knowledge, you cannot disprove it! (laughter!)For one to say that something does not exist, one should know about the whole universe. So you can never be one hundred percent atheist. An atheist is only a believer who is sleeping!
For a person to say, "I don't believe in anything", means he must believe in himself - so he believes in himself about whom he does not even know!
An atheist can never be sincere because sincerity needs depth - and an atheist refuses to go to his depth. Because the deeper he goes, he finds a void, a field of all possibilities - he has to accept that there are many secrets he does not know. He would then need to acknowledge his ignorance, which he refuses to do, because the moment he is sincere, he seriously starts doubting his atheism. A doubt-free atheist is next to impossible! So you can never be a sincere and doubt-free atheist.
When the atheist realizes his ignorance, what does he do? Where does he go? Does he go to a Guru? What does a Guru do to him? (Wait for next week's knowledge!)
Guruji addressed a packed auditorium of prominent scientists and researchers at the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore, the premier institute of India, where He praised the students for initiating this dialogue on "Bridging Science to Humanity". Dr. Abdul Kalam, advisor to the Prime Minister, expressed immense admiration for Gurudev. The 109th country to become a part of the Art of Living map is Mozambique, Africa.

Q: Gurudev, Sometimes I feel like there is a conflict between being in The Art of Living and practicing Islam. Especially when I chant 'Shiva' or 'Ram'. Unfortunately, Islam has gained a bad reputation.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, you should know the history of Islam. How Islam was born, when it was written, and how it changed over period of time. What was said then and why; what is practical and what is not practical. In those days the women population was more, so a man was allowed to marry four women because the male population was very less. You don’t need to follow that today.
Similarly in those days, at a particular point, Mohammad said all the string instruments should be done away with; no music. There was a ban on music. But today, tell me of any one country where music is banned today; even Islamic countries?
So the puritarian Muslims say, 'If you sing or if you dance this is haram, this is against Islam. You should never do that'.
Second, Islam bans taking pictures of any human faces. It is haram in Islam. But tell me, how can you even make your passport without your picture being taken? It is impossible.
I was invited to Bahrain, the king of Bahrain had invited me as they had a conference in the palace. We had the top scholars of Islam there and when they were talking to me, they said it is prohibited to take pictures of the kaba (black stone) when one goes for the haj pilgrimage. But today, people come with their cell phone and everybody is taking pictures. They are taking pictures of the kaba stone and even themselves.
That is why you will see, in Islam there are no human face sculptures at all. There are no sculptures, no photography, no paintings of anybody because it is prohibited in the puritarian Islam. But today, is it possible?
Some Imams gave a fatwa against television. They said the devil has entered the television. You know, in a particular village in India, on one day, everybody was asked to dump their televisions. In one day 5,000 households brought their televisions and dumped it in a pit and stoned them saying this is all haram, because one is not allowed to see human faces and pictures.
So, what is Islam today, and what was the intended aim of Islam? They have grown so far apart.
Islam says that all those who do not believe in my god are infidels, and infidels have no right to exist. This is what is happening with ISIS, this is the puritarian Islamists, the real Islam. They think that Sufis are bad because they adopt music, and they chant. When a Sufi saint died, and a tomb was made, they said these tombs are un-Islamic. They say tombs have to be erased. They did the same to even Mohammad’s tomb because they said it is Un-Islamic. That is why the Shia sect has been declared un-Islamic because the Shias honor these tombs.
So these ideological fights in Islam have caused so many problems. If you steal anything, according to Islam your hands should be cut off. Just imagine a child goes and steals something, you cut off his hand, is it practical today? Is it practical to cut off the hand of anybody? Should a child's hands be chopped off.
Music should be done away with, no photography should be allowed; are these rules practical? There are diverse people everywhere, you have to adjust with everybody. The so-called puritarian Islam creates such conflicts with everybody.
There is another thought of Islam also, that which says that we have created many different tribes and different knowledge, and it is all to be honored. This is one thing said by the Prophet.
So there is diversity in the world, honor the diversity. When you honor the diversity, you are not disregarding your faith.
Once in South Africa, one teacher was teaching a course. In our Sudarshan Kriya, we say 'Om'. One person said that he cannot chant 'Om' because it was against his religion.
So the teacher said, 'Is your faith in your religion so weak that if you chant 'Om' you will lose your faith? I don’t think so. I can chant 'Hallelujah', or 'Allah-Hu-Akbar', or ‘Buddham Sharanam Gachami’, but I still maintain my faith. I still honor whatever faith I am in'.
These words opened his eyes. Just by saying 'Om' you are not going to lose anything. In fact, you will gain.
In the same way, if you sing Christmas carols you are not converted immediately into Christians. God will not get angry with you because you are singing Christmas carols.
If you sing bhajans god is not going to punish you. Shiva means what? That is which is so beautiful, which is so benevolent. The energy or the divinity which is so benevolent.
So, singing songs in different languages of different tradition is not against any god or particular tradition. It is just the perception. This is how the fundamentalists train themselves and other.
They tell you that if you chant some other God's name you become an infidel or something like that.
Today just before coming here I read about a suicide car bombing in Iraq. So many people died. Every day there are suicide bombings, every day there is violence in Pakistan, all in the name of peace. Islam means peace. Yet all that there is in the name of Islam is so much violence; unimaginable violence.
Yazidis in Iraq, they have been following a tradition from thousands of years, but now they are being tortured, killed and massacred and being told they are against Allah, against god. If god was against them he would have done something to them. God is all powerful, if he did not want them to live he would have extinguished them like dinosaurs. We don’t need to do that for god. Let god do his job, let us do our job.
So much violence in the world in the name of religion is very unfortunate. That is why we need to break these barriers between religions.
In Islam there are some great things, like the belief that everybody is same.
There are mass prayers – everybody prays together. Keep these great things and drop those other things which promote division, violence and superiority – that I am superior and everyone else is inferior. Those things should be done away with. And I tell you, there are a lot of enlightened Muslims. There are so many good Muslims on this planet, but just because of these few people and their fanaticism it has brought such a bad name to their religion today that is so unfortunate.
The Prophet’s wife, Fatiman, never wore a burkha. She never even wore a hijab. She was given full rights. I think that later on the male dominated society somewhere snatched the rights of women. They don’t need to do that now.

SHORT QUOTES TO BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY WITH GURUJI

If you want to grow in Divine Love, you have to drop the pride and all the artificial walls you build between yourself and others. Through these walls, we keep judging others, and we think others are judging us.

PEACE IN MIDDLE EAST

PEACE IN MIDDLE EAST

Join the peace work through collective solutions and prayers for the Middle East.

Good evening everyone! We extend a warm welcome to all of you to a special evening of meditation and prayer as we join hands together to pray for peace and restoration in the Middle East.
The dynamic socio-political conditions in Iraq have displaced close to 1.5 million lives bringing several ancient communities on the verge of extinction. Thousands of these are trapped in the Sinjar Mountains in Iraq without food and water. The living conditions in these camps are extremely unfavorable with limited access to health and hygiene. The women and children are exposed to even more vulnerable conditions with a threat of kidnap and flesh trade.
The Art of Living and The International Association of Human Values has been working tirelessly in reaching out to the affected populace and relief efforts are in progress. So far, 2700 Iraqi families from 5 camps have received relief items from our volunteers in Iraq.
The Art of Living and IAHV, along with local NGOs in Iraq have collected 110 tonnes of food and supplies. 40 tonnes of food, water, tents, and warm winter clothing and blankets have been already air dropped by the Iraqi army in the past few days.
We’ll now watch a video on the situation in Iraq.

Background of the Work
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Founder of The Art of Living and the International Association for Human Values has made a commitment to spread the message of peace and non-violence in Iraq. Since September 2003 when Art of Living and IAHV began trauma relief initiatives, around 10,000 people from Iraq have found relief and a new lease of life.
More than 4000 women have been provided vocational training in computers and tailoring. Advanced career training in finance and hospitality sectors have been imparted to more than 300 women.
699 women survivors of violence in Baghdad and 240 in Kurdistan received training to relieve stress and trauma and skills to cope with life’s challenges under the Al Azhar Program. 224 women have received vocational training in tailoring and 117 in computers. While fear and uncertainty loomed over a large part of Iraq, 35 Members of the Kurdish Parliament participated in a special Art of Living program earlier this year for leadership training and peace building initiatives in Arbil, Kurdistan, and Iraq.
Iraq in 2007 with a message of peace and non-violence. He visited the country again in 2008 to galvanize people to work towards a stress-free and violence-free Iraq.
Sri Sri will be travelling to Iraq on the 19th and 20th of November to extend his support towards the on-going restoration activities and strengthen the efforts for peace and harmony. He will be visiting the relief camps in Sinjar and addressing a conference on "Protecting Women and Bringing Stability and Peace."
The work for peace and harmony in the Middle East has been done by ordinary people like all of us.
We all share a common goal: How can we leave a better world for our future generations?
And all of us can make a difference from wherever we are.
Just as an angry person affects other people in a room . Each of us feeling peace can affect the whole world. Let’s create that peace right now, for our world, for our children. Sharing your time and a bit of your consciousness is a big contribution.
Let us all meditate and pray for the betterment of the conditions in the Middle East.
We thank you all to be a part of this peace meditation.
Let us resolve to take this peace to every part of the world.
Sri Sri, government representatives, media persons, social workers, trainers and volunteers working for peace and non violence have sent us many questions for your guidance. We would like to take some of them here:
Sri Sri: Sure. The biggest question is when will peace return to Middle East. This has been the ongoing question for many generations.
Let us all hope and pray that atleast in our generation, in our lifetime we will find an answer for this. We should put an end to this conflict, which has been there for generations now.
Many generations have lived with this question, many are born with this question, and have died with this question: when will peace return?
We are so privileged to experience the peace. We all meditated now. We are so privileged to experience this inner peace. When we realize how lucky we are, how fortunate we are to experience this peace, we feel all the more for the people in Middle East who are deprived of the basic needs, basic security. Let alone finding inner peace.
The question comes when people are starving, when there is so much conflict, when there is so much fear, how can you find inner peace? I would tell you the inner peace brings strength to face the challenges.
Each one of us is a source of energy, source of love, source of peace. If we tap into our true self, our inner self, draw strength from inside, we will be able to face any challenge, any tough situation. And this is what is needed today most. The mental, emotional, spiritual strength for people.
Let us all take a pledge today and let us all be committed to bring this much needed strength to the people who are undergoing so much suffering.
This in addition to the material comforts, social protection, assurances that we would like to bring to them, and make them understand that there is a political will to support them.
Along with this let us not forget that there is a power, there is a strength that comes from deep within us that is absolutely essential in the hour of crisis.
Q: What can be done to bring the hostages back to their family? From Hatim Ido, a Yazidi activist.
Sri Sri: I would like this question to be kept alive till the last hostage comes back. There is no one answer. There can be multiple answers and each answer could be a way to bring the hostages back. By putting sense into those people who are keeping people hostage, by invoking compassion into them, or even going to the extent of punishing them through legal or international laws. We should see that the hostages are brought back. As I saif, there could be many ways. We can't have one way for that. We should explore all avenues.

Q: How can the sunis and the shias work in Iraq together?
From Nirj Deva, a Member of the European Parliament
Sri Sri: They should take example from India. Here Shias, Sunis, Ahmedias, sufis everyone works together. Hindus, muslims, christians everyone works together. Sikh, pasris, jain everyone works together. We need to give them this mutli-culturalism, multi-religious coexistence. Inter-faith dialogue or intra-religious coexistence has to be taught. In fact, they were doing this. It is nothing new to them. For centuries they were together. Only in the recent years this disaster has happened and that too when it is coupled with political and ulterior motives of a few people.

Q: What makes the ISIS such extremists?
Sri Sri: Well, I really don't know. I think the Islamist scholars should answer this question. They should see in what way they have gone wrong, in what way they have misunderstood their own religion. This they should come up and say. I would invite all good-hearted and good-minded people on the planet, especially from the Islamic world who know that these people are doing wrong. Put sense in the hearts and minds of these people. The scholars should stand up and say that their interpretation of the holy scripture is absolutely wrong. This clear message the must bring to the people. Perhaps that can help in some way.

Q:Guruji, you are one of the few leaders who have come to Yazidis rescue and for that we will always be grateful. Yazidis as a religious minority group in Middle East have faced 74 Genocides. Our dwindling number and history shows that we must get out of Middle East to preserve our religion and our people. OR do you think there a possibility of Yazidis staying alive in their homeland? What does the UN, international community, Iraq, and India can do to keep this ancient faith alive?
Sri Sri: Every ancient faith is a world heritage. If Yazidis disappear from the planet, it is the loss for the entire World and its history, its culture, and its diversity. It is the responsibility of every nation to protect the Yazidi minorities. My heart pains when I think that 74 genocides have happened on this ancient community. I would say that you should stick on, because today it is not the middle-ages. And the International community is very well aware of the existence of Yazidis. The United Nations, India, and all other countries would definitely be interested in supporting or keeping alive a world heritage: a community that is world heritage. I am sure. And apart from this if they feel it is very unsafe for one to live, there are many countries in the world which would welcome them to live a free and fair life.

Q: From Sadanand Dhume from the American Enterprise Institute, Washington DC What can concerned people around the world do to help the beleaguered Yazidi community preserve its ancient spiritual heritage?
Sri Sri: They should digitalize all their ancient scriptures and video their way of life. Nobody knows what they do when a child is born. Nobody knows how they get married. And what are the basic precepts of this religion. No one has even heard about this religion till the recent genocide. The world community should make a documentary about them, create more awareness about the existence of the community, and give all sorts of possible support to the community in manner of education, safety and security, and help the community grow economically at the same time preserve their religious identity. Like what has happened with the Parsis. When the Parsis were thrown out of Iran, they found a home in India. They have preserved their culture, their tradition, and their language. Everything they have kept intact. The kings of India in those days gave full protection for Parsis to practice their religion and to preserve it. Similarly, today every part of the world should not try to convert them. In fact they should help them to preserve their culture, religion, and identity.

Q: Mirza Ismail, Chairman of Yazidi Human Rights, Organization - International Ontario, Canada asks: The Islamic sect has committed 74 genocides against the Yazidis just because we are from a different religion, different faith. Can you help us get recognized as a ethno-religious group?
Sri Sri: Definitely. As I said earlier, every minority is a heritage of world culture. If any culture or minority community is extinguishing from this planet, the world is at loss. The world has to take cognizance of this. We will do all that is possible to preserve this ancient tradition or culture.
You know the main problem is some people think only my religion is greater. This is the only true way to God. This type of brain washing and wrong indoctrination has been the cause of violence in the world in the name of religion. We must wake and see the world has many traditions and each one of them is precious and we need to maintain them and preserve them. It is like preserving bio-diversity. We preserve the plants, birds, and other species on the planet. There is so much attention in preserving bio-diversity on this planet. We need to preserve the cultural and religious diversity as well. I am all for it.

Q: Are you willing to have a dialogue with Abu Bakhr Baghdadi, ISIS leader?

Sri Sri: I would very much like to meet Abu Bakhr Baghdadi, and I would like to talk to him, have some dialogue with him. I am all ready. I have already sent messages to people there, our organizers that I very much wish to meet with this gentleman. Definitely. Anyone can make it possible, I would like to undergo that meeting. Either in person or even through Skype. However it is. However, he would like to have. I would like to have a few minutes of dialogue with him.

Q: We hear that people are trying to convert Yazidis to other religions. What can be done to stop this? And what is your message to those who are trying to do this?
Sri Sri: I think that I just said this already. We must maintain a religion which has been there since a long time. The world should know of such a custom, tradition, religion that existed. Not thinking whether this is right or wrong, whether this the true religion, not true religion. We should not go into that. We should preserve the ancient religion like we preserve the bio-diversity of this planet. I would tell people please do not venture into converting people and taking them off from their roots. Let them be who they are, what they are. Let them enjoy. Let us learn from them.
There is nothing wrong in exchange of knowledge. A Yazidi can learn something from Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism. There is nothing wrong in teaching what you know. But do not convert them, tell them what they are doing is wrong, and rob them of their roots, of their culture, of their identity.
This is my humble submission to all those who are trying to change Yazidis. We need to maintain their cultural, religious identity.

Q: How can enemies be taught to treat each other as brothers? From Luis Moreno Ocampo, The Former Chief Prosecutor of International Criminal Court

Sri Sri: Yes. This needs a lot of skill.
It needs a lot of patience and perseverance.
First of all, the enemies should be asked to come for a dialogue. It can happen only through a person who does not take sides. When they know there is someone who does not take sides, who can mediate. So (make them) agree to come for mediation, and then it needs a lot of communication skills in bringing people together (to) sit and talk.
Mistrust and miscommunication can be cleared through dialogue. Dialogue should never be given up or stopped.

Q: Many Yazidis feel they there is no chance of living in peace while in Iraq. Many have shown interest in migrating elsewhere. Can you talk to leaders across the world (including European Union) to let Yazidis immigrate to restart their lives? From Adoul kejjan
Sri Sri: Definitely. We have already sent a letter to our honorable Prime Minster of India and the Foreign Minister of India too. They are looking into what type of help we can give to Yazidis.

(Sri Sri, a few of Yazidi students are part of our audience and would like to ask a question.) Q: I am a Yazidi student from Iraq and studying in Bangalore. I would like to thank Guruji for helping our community in Iraq. Now we are in 21st century, the century of technology and in our community there have been 74 genocides. Is there somebody against this community or is this because of our place? Is there a chance to be back to our life like other people?

Sri Sri: Definitely. First of all, I welcome you all. Please be assured that we are all with you. The Yazidi community is not alone in its fight against terrorism, injustice, and violence. We are with you shoulder to shoulder. As I said, please do not lose hope. There is hope for humanity.
The age of technology has made it possible for everyone to know what is happening. Otherwise, we were dependent only on the newspapers. Many times they publish. It depends on their whims and fancies. Many times they don't even publish it around the world. But now, it is not the case.
Through social media, people have become aware of what is happening with the community and how much atrocities have happened with them. You have earned the sympathy, goodwill, and kindness of millions of people around the world. Be assured that you will have a better future because the world community is with you.

Q: Gurudev what are the factors that brings around war, when all religions talk about peace?

Sri Sri: 1. Religion not for religion's sake but for political ulterior motives. People use religion, caste, language, and other identities to further their own cause. Many times it is more political and more vested interests than purely religion.
2. Other times, it is mistrust or misinterpretation or misunderstanding of religion.

Q: What can people, who cannot contribute financially, do to save the Yazidis?
Sri Sri: Spread the word. Write about it. It is only not financial. You can create awareness among people. Tell people to shun violence and write against violence. You can do a million things. Think about it. Even saying or giving your support or solidarity with the people who are suffering is itself a very good sign. Each one of you can talk to 100, 200, 1000 people and make them aware that we need to bring peace.

Q: The end of this war will give rise to a lot of trauma-relief work in Iraq. How do you see India as a country contributing to this need?
Sri Sri: India has a load of wealth and wisdom in yoga, meditation, ayurveda, cultural roots. So, it can share with the people more and more. In fact this is something that we have not done well in the past. If we had spread the fragrance of peace and multi-culturalism that India has been nurturing, nourishing, and enjoying for the past decades and centuries to Middle East. If we had gone a little proactive in instilling and planting this thought of peace and non-violence in the hearts and minds of people around the world, perhaps, I would say perhaps, people would not get into the violent rage that they are getting into today. Not that there is no violence in India. There is violence in India too, but these are the people who have not had any sense about India's core values of non-violence. People in India also who have moved away from the idea of the non-violence, dharma, knowledge, wisdom, and the technology of experiencing the inner strength. They are involving. But it is minuscule compared to what is happening in the world. So we wish that the ISIS ideology does not filter into the Indian minds and they do not create disturbances here also. This one has to be watchful. People here who have believed in non-violence and peaceful coexistence should not remain to themselves. They should go and plant this knowledge wherever it is needed, especially in the conflict zones.

Q: What should we do to maintain religious diversity in the world in the context of the current crisis in the Middle East?
Sri Sri: Be more assertive of multiculturalism or pluralism. And encourage all those schools of thought or philosophy which encourages this, which say that the whole world is one family. Not those philosophies which divides people but the philosophies which say we are all one.

Q: Can you talk to Kurdistan govt on our behalf about ways to bring this trust back?
Sri Sri: Yes. I would like from the Yazidis what exactly are their needs and their demands. Any particular thing that they want, other than giving safety and security to the people who are suffering there. I would definitely do that. Anyway I will be meeting the government of Kurdistan. I will definitely do all that is in my capacity.

Q: Gurudev, I cannot travel there. Can I save a Yazidi child by adopting them and helping them to maintain their traditions?
Sri Sri: Definitely you can do (that). You can contact our IAHV office. We have already adopted 550 families. I don't know how many now. It was a week ago. The numbers are going up very fast. Also we are airlifting about 110 tonnes of food materials, tents, water, and supplies to them. We are also bringing toys to the small kids. There are hundreds of kids. There are many ways that we can be part of it. You can get in touch with the IAHV organization.

Q: What will be your advise to the Christian community in the Middle East?
Sri Sri: Sri Sri: The Yazidis are not alone. Along with Yazidis, there are some Christians, Shias, and other minority groups. They are all at the receiving end. We want safe passage for all of them. We want them to come back to normalcy; their life to be back on track again. So, let's pray for them, let's meditate for them. Let's all together see what we can do to help this community.

Q: What is it in India that allows minority communities to thrive and flourish?
Sri Sri: It is the philosophy of this country which majority of people have been honoring from ages. Every path leads to the same truth, same light. So that multiversity or multi-thought process or ideas were always encouraged here. And perhaps this philosophy has given that strength of peaceful coexistence.

Q: Sri Sri with your popularity in India and worldwide, can you please talk to Indian govt on our behalf and help?
Sri Sri: Sri Sri: On behalf of Yazidis? Ofcourse, I do. I would like you also to write to the government directly. That will also be one thing you can all do. The community and community leaders can come together and appeal what exactly is the help you would want from the Indian government. In fact, India is also a victim of this terror there. Around 80 Indian citizens are under the captivity of ISIS. Let's pray for their safe return as well.

Q: Sri Sri, we have a message from the Iraqi ambassador of Oman, "They thanks Gurudev for taking interest. She asks us to continue our work in saving the victims, not only Yazidis, but Christians, Turkians, and other Muslims. As ISIS is targeting all of them.

Sri Sri: Yes. Absolutely. It is not just the Yazidis. There are many Muslims who are victims of the current, violent conflict there. Let's pray for all of them to have their life back on track.

Q: Gurudev, till now people are going to Iraq and Syria to fight the war. There are many like me who want to go there to spread peace. What can we do?
Sri Sri: Just be in touch with us. Let's all join hands and do what we can.
Usually Peace conferences are held in big cities where there is law and order, where everything is safe. People sit in big hotels, 5-star hotels. Hours together we talk about peace and resolving conflict. I think we should make a change here. That is why, I said I am going to go to Iraq and have a peace conference in the midst of conflicts and invite all the people, stakeholders of conflict and peace in that area. We are having a conference on 20th November for peace right at the heart of all the conflicts. I thought for a change we need to do something like this to give peace a chance, to raise the voice of non-violence in areas which are bogged down by violence and conflict.

Q: Do you foresee a spill over of the ISIS movement in India?
Sri Sri: Sri Sri: We all must be concerned about it. Let's spread this awareness as fast as we can.

Q: How is the balance of peace linked to a balanced society? Does an imbalance in society lead to war?
Sri Sri: Yes. Demographic changes or financial disparity among people, educational disparity.
There could be many levels of disparity. And the best way to resolve this is bring wisdom. Bring people closer to each other.
The thought of communism is to remove all that which brings disparity and make them all one. But we have seen the last 45-50 years that it has failed miserably, it has not worked well.
The way we need to move forward is to bring communities together, ideas together, technology together. And moving forward with one aim of bringing happiness to every citizen of this planet. Thank you.

Thank you Sri Sri for your views and guidance on these issues. Your upcoming visit to Iraq will further the voice of peace for the Middle east. Your Holiness, people from 2000 locations from 79 countries have joined us on the webcast to show their support for a peaceful Iraq.
Many have written to us expressing a desire to contribute to towards the relief efforts in the Middle East. Please visit www.iahv.org/us-en-yazidi-relief.

PEACE IN MIDDLE EAST

IAHV and The Art of Living

The current ISIS onslaught has aggravated humanitairan crisis in Iraq and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Founder of International Association For Human Values & The Art of Living, has taken it upon him to come the rescue of the distressed Iraqis, especially the Yazidi community.

Yazidis are an ancient community on the verge of extinction. Over the last few decades, this community of over 23 million people have been reduced to a mere million. Thousands stranded at Mt.Sinjar relief camps, deprived of basic amenities like food, water, medication, clothes and more cry for help and rescue!

The Art of Living in partnership with the International Association of Human Values has been working tirelessly in reaching out to these wounded souls. So far 2700 Iraqi families from 5 camps have received relief items from our volunteers in Iraq. The Art of Living and IAHV, along with local NGOs in Iraq have collected 110 tonnes of food and supplies in Iraq. 40 tonnes of food, water, tents, and warm winter clothing and blankets have been already air dropped by the Iraqi army in the past few days and it is continuing.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar had earlier called on Governments of Europe, America and India to save the thousands of Yazidis trapped in the Sinjar Mountains In Iraq. Terming it as one of the worst genocides of the 21st century, the humanitarian leader had urged people to come forward to help the people of the strife-torn land in any way they could.

Sri Sri will be visiting Erbil, Iraq as a keynote speaker for the IAHV Peace Conference and is also due to visiting relief camps at Mt.Sinjar on the 19th/20th November 2014.
