★Chapter 1★

THE YOGA OF DEJECTION OF ARJUNA

《1-47 Verses》

Shloka 33

"yesam arthe kanksitam no rajyam bhogah sukhani ca
ta ime'vasthita yuddhe pranams tyaktva dhanani ca"

येषामर्थे काङक्षितं नो राज्यं भोगाः सुखानि च ।
त इमेऽवस्थिता युद्धे प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा धनानि च ॥

Shloka 34

"acaryah pitarah putras tathaiva ca pitamahah
matulah svasurah pautrah syalah sambandhinas tatha"

आचार्याः पितरः पुत्रास्तथैव च पितामहाः ।
मातुलाः श्वशुराः पौत्राः श्यालाः संबंधिनस्तथा ॥

Those very persons for whose sake we covet the kingdom, luxuries and pleasures - teachers , uncles, sons and nephews and even so , grand-uncles and great grand-uncles, father-in-law, grand nephews, brothers-in-law and other relations -are here arrayed on the battlefield staking their lives and wealth.

Shloka - 35

"etan na hantum icchami ghnato'pi madhusudana
api trailokyarajyasya hetoh kim nu mahikrte"

एतान्न हन्तुमिच्छामि घ्नतोऽपि मधुसूदन ।
अपि त्रैलोक्यराज्यस्य हेतोः किं नु महीकृते ॥

O Slayer of Madhu, I do not want to kill them, though they may slay me, even for the sovereignty over the three worlds; how much the less for the kingdom here on Earth.
